Summary
- Edition labels describe the text: whether it is complete, shortened, or adapted.
- Narration labels describe who reads the book and how the voices are shared.
Check the audiobook’s title, description, and product details on its publisher, store, or library page. Narrator credits may appear as “Read by” or “Narrated by.”
Abridged and unabridged
- Abridged: A shortened, edited version of the book.
- Unabridged: The full text of the edition being read.
An edition is a particular version of a book, such as a new translation or revision.
On the publisher’s listing for The Roald Dahl Audio Collection:
- “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Abridged)” appears in Book Description. It marks that story as shortened.
- “Read by Roald Dahl” appears beneath the collection title. It names the narrator, who also wrote the stories.

Narration and cast
| Label | How the voices work |
|---|---|
| Solo or single narrator | One person reads the narration and all character voices. |
| Dual narration | Narrators split chapters or sections. Each reads every character’s lines within their own sections. |
| Duet narration | Narrators keep their assigned characters across chapters, including when those characters speak in someone else’s chapter. |
| Full cast | Different performers voice different characters. A narrator may read the descriptive passages. |
On the publisher’s listing for The Golden Compass, the “Read by” credits include Philip Pullman and a full cast.
Full cast does not tell you whether the recording is abridged.
Dramatized and adapted
A dramatized audiobook adapts the book for performance. It may use a script, music, and sound effects. For example, the sound of a door slamming can replace a sentence describing it.
Adapted means the work was changed for a different format, audience, or purpose. Dramatization is one kind of adaptation.
Can you tell from the filename?
A filename alone cannot confirm the edition or narration. It may include those details, but names can be changed. Check them against the original listing.
Endings such as .mp3 and .m4b describe the file format. Our M4B file guide explains what these formats can contain.
